‘Grocery Store Joe’ Amabile Reveals Brain Tumor Diagnosis, Surgery Planned

CHICAGO, IL. (THECOUNT) — Joe Amabile, widely known to fans as “Grocery Store Joe” from ABC’s “The Bachelorette,” “Bachelor in Paradise,” and “Dancing With the Stars,” revealed Monday that doctors have diagnosed him with what appears to be a brain tumor following an unexpected MRI.

Amabile shared the news in a video posted to Instagram, telling followers the diagnosis came as a complete surprise. He said physicians discovered a lesion approximately the size of a blueberry that appears to be a tumor.

According to Amabile, doctors have scheduled surgery in approximately two weeks to remove the lesion. He said the tissue will then undergo laboratory testing to determine its exact nature.

Amabile told followers the lesion was discovered in its early stages and said he remains optimistic about the outcome of the procedure.

In the caption accompanying his Instagram post, Amabile said he is focusing on staying positive while expressing gratitude for the support he has received from family and friends during the difficult time.

Amabile first became known to television audiences in 2018 after appearing as a contestant on ABC’s “The Bachelorette.” Although his time on the dating series was brief, he quickly became a fan favorite and earned the nickname “Grocery Store Joe” because of his career in the grocery business.

Later in 2018, he joined the cast of “Bachelor in Paradise,” where he continued to build a large following. He returned to the reality series again in 2021 and ultimately became engaged to fellow franchise alum Serena Pitt. The couple later married.

In addition to his appearances within the Bachelor franchise, Amabile competed during Season 27 of “Dancing With the Stars” in 2018.

Amabile did not disclose additional medical details or identify the type of tumor, noting that doctors expect to determine more after the lesion is surgically removed and examined.

Neither Amabile nor his physicians have released additional information regarding his diagnosis beyond what he shared publicly on social media.
