DORA, AL. (THECOUNT) — Ira Gerald Tillman-Murphey, 65, of Concord, North Carolina, has been identified as the man who died Wednesday night after he was struck by a vehicle while walking on Interstate 22 in the Dora area, according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.
The fatal incident occurred at approximately 8:20 p.m. Wednesday on eastbound I-22 at Snowville Brent Road in the Dora area.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said Tillman-Murphey had been involved in a single-vehicle crash before the fatal pedestrian strike. His vehicle came to rest on a grassy embankment adjacent to the interstate.
According to authorities, Tillman-Murphey exited his vehicle and walked into the eastbound travel lanes. He was subsequently struck by an oncoming motorist.
The driver of the striking vehicle stopped at the scene and called 911, according to the coroner’s office.
Tillman-Murphey was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 8:45 p.m.
The circumstances surrounding the initial crash and the subsequent pedestrian strike remain under investigation by Alabama State Troopers.
The investigation is ongoing, and additional details regarding the sequence of events leading to the fatal collision had not been released.
Dora is located in Jefferson County in north-central Alabama, approximately 30 miles northwest of Birmingham. Interstate 22 is a major east-west highway connecting the Birmingham area with communities across northern Alabama and continuing toward Mississippi.
