Kobe Bryant straight-up scolded a fan today via Twitter for using the word “gay” in a derogatory way! Hey I think that was a cool move on Bryant’s part.
Bryant sent @PacSmoove and @pooke09 a message, saying:
“Just letting you know@PacSmoove @pookeo9 that using “your gay” as a way to put someone down ain’t ok! #notcool delete that out ur vocab.”
The two Twitter users were quick to note that Kobe was being a bit of a hypocrite. After all, Bryant did get fined $100,000 in 2011 for calling a referee a “f**king fag.” But Bryant said that he’s changed his ways that he was sorry for the way he used to talk.
Bryant said:
@onepercentofone @pookeo9 exactly! That wasn’t cool and was ignorant on my part. I own it and learn from it and expect the same from others.”
The NBA might not be as homophobic as the NFL but the league does see its share of bigotry. Incidents like Kobe Bryant’s comment in 2011 and Amare Stoudemire’s offensive tweet at the beginning of 2012 show that there is still a long way to go for equal rights in sports.
