MEMPHIS, TN. (THECOUNT) — Bill Dundee, the legendary “Superstar” who became one of the most influential figures in the history of Memphis wrestling, has died at 82, according to an announcement from his son, Jamie Dundee.
Jamie announced Sunday that his father died at approximately 3:30 a.m. No cause of death has been publicly disclosed.

Dundee was one of the defining stars of the Memphis wrestling territory, where his long-running partnership and rivalry with Jerry “The King” Lawler became a major part of the region’s wrestling history. The two frequently teamed together before becoming fierce opponents in some of the territory’s most memorable feuds.
Dundee began his professional wrestling career in Australia in 1962 before eventually making his way to the United States, where he became a major star during the territory wrestling era. He arrived in the U.S. in 1974 and established himself in the Memphis territory.
Dundee spent much of his career in the Memphis area, competing for promotions including the Continental Wrestling Association and United States Wrestling Association. He also worked behind the scenes as a booker in Memphis, Louisiana and Georgia, helping shape wrestling storylines and talent in several territories.
His career included runs with Jim Crockett Promotions, Central States Wrestling and Florida Championship Wrestling. Dundee later appeared in World Championship Wrestling during the 1990s as Sir William, serving as the manager of Lord Steven Regal.
Dundee’s influence extended beyond his own matches. He became known as both an accomplished performer and a wrestling strategist whose work in the ring and behind the scenes helped shape professional wrestling during the territory era.
He was inducted into the Memphis Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2017, recognizing his decades of contributions to the Memphis wrestling scene.
Dundee remained active in professional wrestling for decades. His final in-ring appearance came in 2019, bringing an end to a career that had begun in Australia more than five decades earlier.
Dundee’s health had become a concern in recent years. Jamie previously revealed that his father had been diagnosed with dementia. The diagnosis was publicly disclosed years before Dundee’s death, but no cause of death has been announced.
Just one day before his death, Dundee was honored during Memphis Wrestling’s September 5 episode. Members of the roster came out to greet the longtime star, with the promotion recognizing his influence on generations of performers and his place in Memphis wrestling history.
The tribute highlighted Dundee’s enduring connection to the Memphis wrestling community and came just hours before his death. His career had included championship runs, major rivalries, tag-team partnerships, booking positions and appearances across numerous wrestling promotions.
Dundee’s rivalry and partnership with Lawler remained among the most recognizable chapters of his career. Their matches and storylines helped establish both men as central figures during Memphis wrestling’s most prominent years.
For generations of wrestling fans, Dundee’s “Superstar” persona became synonymous with the Memphis territory. His career encompassed wrestling, championship competition, booking and mentoring, giving him an influence that extended well beyond his own matches.
