LIBERTY, MO. (THECOUNT) — Micah Jo Barnett, a junior running back at William Jewell College in Missouri, died Saturday after suffering a medical emergency during the college football team’s season opener against Fort Lewis College, according to the school and reports.
Barnett collapsed during the game shortly after scoring a touchdown in the first quarter. First responders provided medical treatment at the scene before Barnett was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The exact cause of Barnett’s death has not been released.
William Jewell College confirmed Barnett’s death and said the school community was mourning the loss of the student-athlete. The college also announced that counseling services were being made available to students and staff and that a vigil would be held in his honor.

Barnett’s death has also prompted the launch of a GoFundMe campaign seeking financial assistance for his family as they face unexpected funeral and memorial expenses. The fundraiser had established a goal of $35,000.
The organizer describes Barnett as a talented and kind young man who was loved by his family, friends, teammates and community. The organizer identified themselves as a former youth coach of Barnett and a family friend and said donations would go directly to the Barnett family.
Barnett previously played football at Liberty North High School, where he was a member of the 2023 team. According to the fundraiser, his time with the program resulted in lasting friendships and memories before he continued his football career at William Jewell College.

Football remained an important part of Barnett’s life as he progressed to the collegiate level. His final game began with him making an immediate impact on the field, scoring a touchdown during the opening quarter before the medical emergency interrupted the contest.
