NORTH ATTLBOROUGH, MA. (THECOUNT) — Jonathan Lozada has been identified as the Providence teen who apparently drowned in a North Attleborough pond Sunday.
Lozada, 16, was the teenager swimming in Whiting’s Pond off Broadway on Sunday afternoon when he lost his life, according to North Attleborough Fire Chief Michael Brousseau.
The Bristol County district attorney said Lozada was visiting the pond with a group pf friends and family members when he suddenly encountered difficulty swimming.
According to investigators, witnesses said Lozada flailed his arms briefly before going underwater. A friend and a boy swimming with Lozada tried to reach for him, but he quickly descended into the deeper water at the pond.
Other swimmers attempted to assist in the search for Lozada, but could not locate him in the murky water.
Dive teams encountered murky, muddy waters that hindered their search. A thermal imaging drone and a Massachusetts State Police helicopter were used to assist. source
Norton Fire Department rescue divers found Lozada’s body about 20 feet from shore in about 40 feet of water.
He was later pronounced dead.
