WEST BATON ROUGE PARISH, LA. (THECOUNT) — Taniya Smith, 24, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was killed late Wednesday night in a crash along LA 1 northbound near the Intracoastal Waterway in West Baton Rouge Parish, according to authorities.
The fatal crash occurred just before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday south of the Intracoastal Waterway near the OYO Motel and RaceTrac along LA 1.
Deputies with the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene after receiving reports of a serious vehicle crash along the northbound lanes of the highway.
Authorities identified Smith as the driver involved in the deadly collision.
Officials have not yet released details regarding the circumstances that led up to the crash.
No additional vehicles or injured parties were immediately identified by investigators.
Emergency crews responded to the scene late Wednesday night as deputies secured the area and began documenting evidence.
The crash scene near the commercial corridor along LA 1 caused activity in the area while authorities conducted their preliminary investigation.
Louisiana Highway 1 serves as a major north-south roadway through West Baton Rouge Parish, connecting communities along the Mississippi River corridor west of Baton Rouge.
The area south of the Intracoastal Waterway includes a mix of industrial traffic, commercial businesses, and local commuter travel between Baton Rouge and surrounding communities.
Authorities have not stated whether speed, impairment, weather, or roadway conditions may have contributed to the crash.
Officials also have not released information regarding whether Smith was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.
The West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the deadly crash.
