According to a GoFundMe page shared by the Sheriff’s Office, Higgins had a rare form of bladder cancer.

Via GoFundMe:

“April 30, 2019: It’s with tremendous sorrow and excruciating heartbreak that I tell you, Matt passed away just after noon today. He died peacefully in bed in my arms, just as we wanted it to be. Thank you all for standing behind us throughout this crazy journey <3"

The Sheriff’s Office said Higgins “leaves a void that cannot be filled” and their “memories will never fade,” reports WXII.
