Mexico Cartel Leader Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala Arrested In Tiktok Influencer, Mayor Killings

MEXICO CITY, MX. (THECOUNT)Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, an alleged leader of one of Mexico’s most violent criminal organizations linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, has been arrested in connection with the killings of beauty influencer Valeria Márquez and Uruapan Mayor Carlos Alberto Manzo Rodríguez, according to Mexican authorities.

Mexican officials said Álvarez Ayala, also known as “El R-1,” was taken into custody in late July during a joint operation involving military personnel and law enforcement agencies. Authorities allege he led “Los Rs,” a criminal organization affiliated with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel that investigators say has been involved in drug trafficking, extortion and multiple homicides.

According to Mexico’s Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar Hamid García Harfuch, Álvarez Ayala allegedly ordered and financed the May 2025 killing of 23-year-old beauty influencer Valeria Márquez.

Investigators allege the killing stemmed from Márquez’s previous relationship with Álvarez Ayala’s son, Francisco Álvarez. Authorities said Francisco allegedly threatened Márquez after the couple ended their relationship and remains a fugitive.

Márquez was fatally shot while live streaming from her beauty salon in Zapopan. Investigators said the gunman posed as a delivery driver, confirmed her identity, then opened fire before fleeing. The attack was captured during the livestream, which ended after Márquez collapsed from her injuries.

Authorities have arrested another suspect in connection with Márquez’s killing, although officials have not identified that individual as the alleged shooter. The investigation remains ongoing.

Mexican officials also accuse Álvarez Ayala of ordering and financing the November 2025 assassination of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Alberto Manzo Rodríguez, who had publicly spoken against organized crime. Manzo was shot and killed during Day of the Dead celebrations in Michoacán.

According to García Harfuch, 31 people have been arrested in connection with the mayor’s killing as investigators continue dismantling the criminal network allegedly responsible for the attack.

Authorities have not announced when Álvarez Ayala will make his initial court appearance or disclosed additional charges that may be filed as the investigations continue.

Mexico City is the nation’s capital, while Zapopan is located in the western state of Jalisco and Uruapan is in neighboring Michoacán, regions that have experienced ongoing cartel violence.
