TX HS Band Director Russell Barbee ID’d As Victim In Sunday San Antonio Fatal Crash

SAN ANTONIO, TX. (THECOUNT) — Russell Barbee has been identified as the victim in a fatal single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning on the Northwest Side of San Antonio. Barbee, 40, was a longtime band director at J. Frank Dobie Junior High School in Cibolo and a well-known figure within the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District community.

Barbee was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital following the crash, which occurred in the 19100 block of Interstate 10 West. The area is located along a major corridor serving San Antonio’s northwest region. According to a preliminary report released by the San Antonio Police Department, the crash happened shortly after 2:45 a.m. Sunday.

Authorities say Barbee was operating a gray Ford Expedition when the vehicle struck a roadway barrier on the right side of the highway. The SUV subsequently rolled over and came to rest on the main lanes of I-10. Emergency crews responded to the scene and transported him in critical condition to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office said Monday that the official cause and manner of death remain pending.

Barbee’s death was confirmed to families and staff in a letter issued by Byron P. Steele High School Principal Justin Linthicum. In the statement, Linthicum described Barbee as a valued educator who had a meaningful impact on students and colleagues across multiple campuses within the district.

“Mr. Barbee was a valued member of our school community who made a lasting impact on many of our students and staff,” Linthicum wrote in the letter.

Counseling services were made available to students beginning Monday morning, particularly those involved in band programs who had direct interaction with Barbee. School officials indicated that support resources will remain accessible throughout the week.

Barbee dedicated more than 17 years to music education in the San Antonio area. He was a graduate of Randolph High School and later earned his degree in music education from Texas Tech University. Over the course of his career, he taught at several campuses and was recognized for his commitment to student development through music instruction.

In addition to his work in education, Barbee was an active musician. He performed with the Heart of Texas Concert Band, where he played tenor saxophone. According to biographical information published by the organization, he was proficient in multiple instruments beyond his primary focus.

Barbee is survived by his wife, Stacey Barbee, and their two sons. Stacey Barbee is also employed within the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD, serving as a secretary to an athletic director. The couple shared a connection through music and both participated in the concert band, with Stacey playing trumpet.

Following his death, members of the Steele High School band community began organizing efforts to support the Barbee family. A post shared by the band’s booster organization indicated that donations are being collected to assist with funeral expenses, meals, and other financial needs.

In a response shared publicly, Stacey Barbee noted the significance of music in her husband’s life, stating that it was central to his identity and passion.

The crash remains under investigation by the San Antonio Police Department. No additional vehicles were reported to be involved in the incident, and no further details have been released regarding contributing factors.
