DETROIT, MI. (THECOUNT) — Former Detroit, Michigan state Sen. Morris Hood III, died Tuesday. He was 55.
Hood, a Democrat who rose to Senate minority floor leader during his 14 years in office, passed away Tuesday according to several of his former colleagues on social media.
Former Lt. Gov. John Cherry Jr. and Rep. Cynthia Johnson said on Facebook that Hood died after contracting COVID-19.
Hood had been hospitalized for more than two weeks. Former Sen. Glenn Anderson, who served with Hood, said in late April that he was on a ventilator, according to CrainsDetroit.
Hood underwent a kidney transplant in late 2016.
Hood served in the Senate from 2011-18 following six years in the House from 2003-08. He recently had begun a position in the Wayne County Executive Office.
Hood was the son of the legendary former Rep. Morris Hood Jr., who served in the House 1971-98.
