Former UNI Softball Star Micalla Rettinger Dead In Apparent Random Waterloo Vehicle Shooting

WATERLOO, IA. (THECOUNT) — Former University of Northern Iowa softball player, Micalla Rettinger, has been identified as the victim in a fatal random shooting in Waterloo early Sunday morning.

Rettinger, 25, was operating a vehicle in the area of the Cedar River between the Highway 218 Bridge and the Conger Ave Bridge, when a bullet entered the vehicle’s driver side window and struck her in the neck, the Waterloo Police Department said.

Rettinger was traveling with two passengers around 2:30 a.m. Sunday when she was struck in the neck by a bullet, officials said.

A second passenger, 32-year-old Adam Kimball, was injured and is being treated at the University of Iowa Hospitals. The third passenger was uninjured, reports WSMV.

“There is nothing to indicate the victims in this case were in any way involved in any activity that would have caused them to be targeted in this manner,” the police department said in a news release, reports

Rettinger graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 2016 with a degree in biology. She was a member of the Panthers softball team.

“We are devastated to learn of the senseless death of Micalla Rettinger,” David Harris, the university’s director of athletics, said in a news release. “This news is heartbreaking to our softball team, UNI Athletics and the entire campus. Our thoughts and prayers are with Micalla’s family and friends.”

According to the release, Rettinger was an “outstanding outfielder for the Panthers.” In her junior and senior years, she earned Second-Team Missouri Valley All-Conference honors, the school said.
