NJ Police Officer Disguised As Shrubs Catch 74 Drivers During Distracted Driving Operation

DUNELLEN, NJ. (THECOUNT) — A New Jersey police department used an unconventional tactic to catch distracted drivers, deploying an officer disguised as shrubbery during an enforcement operation that resulted in 74 citations in just six hours, according to the Dunellen Police Department.

The Dunellen Police Department conducted the Distracted Driving Enforcement Detail on July 29 in a highly trafficked downtown area with significant pedestrian activity. Authorities said the operation focused on enforcing New Jersey’s Handheld Cell Phone Law, which prohibits drivers from using handheld electronic devices while operating a vehicle.

During the operation, an officer wearing a ghillie suit, designed to blend into natural surroundings, observed passing motorists while positioned near the roadway. The disguise allowed officers to identify drivers who were looking at or using handheld devices while behind the wheel.

Police said the operation resulted in 74 citations issued to drivers who were allegedly distracted by their phones or other electronic devices.

The department shared information about the enforcement effort in a social media post, reminding motorists that electronic notifications and messages can wait while driving.

The Dunellen Police Department did not release additional details about the specific locations used during the operation or whether any crashes were connected to distracted driving during the enforcement period.

Dunellen is located in Middlesex County in central New Jersey, approximately 30 miles southwest of New York City and near several heavily traveled commuter routes.
