MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD. (THECOUNT) — Thabiso Mandela Mokuena, 24, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, has been identified as the suspected impaired driver in a Sunday morning fatal multi-vehicle crash in Montgomery County. Sandra Lorena Morales De Arevalo, 35, of Germanville, Maryland, has been identified as the fatality.
According to reports, Thabi Mokuena was operating a Tesla Model S on Interstate 270 near Montrose Road in Rockville, when the vehicle came into rear-end contact with a Toyota Sienna around 3:30 a.m. Sunday. An approaching Chevrolet Cruze attempted to swerve out of the way, but then also came into rear-end contact with the Toyota.

De Arevalo, who was of three passengers in the Toyota, was pronounced dead at the scene of blunt force trauma injuries. The two other passengers, both males, were transported to Inova Trauma Center for treatment of unknown injuries.
Mokuena was taken into custody for suspicion of impaired driving.
Mokuena was transported to the Maryland State Police Rockville Barrack before he was released after troopers consulted with the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, according to MSP. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be turned over to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office to determine what charges should be filed in this case.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
