According to CHP Officer Tyler Hahn, Walker was driving a 2003 Audi A4 convertible westbound on I-580 at approximately 90 miles per hour when he made an aggressive maneuver to pass a slower-moving Honda. In doing so, Walker lost control of the Audi, which launched off the off-ramp and overturned down the south side embankment into the brush alongside the freeway. Walker was pronounced dead at the scene. The Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau confirmed his identity and that his family has been notified.
The driver of the Honda stopped at the scene and provided a witness statement to officers. No other occupants were in Walker’s vehicle, and no other injuries were reported.
Officer Hahn stated that whether alcohol was a contributing factor is unknown and remains pending further investigation.
The Isabel Avenue/Highway 84 off-ramp was closed for more than three hours for the investigation and cleanup at the scene.
Walker was a resident of Livermore, California.
The Isabel Avenue interchange at I-580 is one of the primary access points into the city of Livermore from the freeway, serving as the southern terminus of State Route 84 — a highway that extends westward through the Tri-Valley and across the Dumbarton Bridge into the San Francisco Peninsula. The interchange at Exit 51 also provides access to Las Positas College and significant residential and commercial development on both the north and south sides of the freeway. The area is a high-traffic corridor, particularly during evening commute hours and on weekends.
Livermore is a city of approximately 95,000 residents located in eastern Alameda County in the Tri-Valley region of the San Francisco Bay Area, approximately 35 miles east of Oakland and 50 miles southeast of San Francisco. The city is home to two major federal research institutions — Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories — and serves as a regional hub for wine country tourism, healthcare, and commerce. Livermore is bordered by Pleasanton to the west, Dublin to the northwest, and the Altamont Pass to the east, beyond which lies San Joaquin County.
Interstate 580 through Livermore is a heavily traveled east-west freeway corridor connecting the Bay Area to the Central Valley via the Altamont Pass. The stretch through the Tri-Valley carries a high volume of commuter, commercial, and recreational traffic, and the segment approaching the Altamont Pass has historically recorded elevated speeds due to its wide, open alignment and light enforcement presence during evening and overnight hours.
The California Highway Patrol is leading the investigation. No further information has been released.
