LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL. (THECOUNT) — Harley James Coyer, of Anderson, Alabama, has been identified as the Lauderdale County Jail who died Tuesday night.

Coyer, 37, died while in custody at the Florence facility on Tuesday night.

According to officials, Correction deputies were alerted by other inmates and an on-duty nurse responded. Life-saving measures were attempted by the nurse and ambulance once they were on scene but were unsuccessful.

The Lauderdale County Coroner responded and pronounced Coyer dead.

A cause of death was not provided.

Officials say there are no obvious signs of trauma or foul play and an autopsy report has been ordered.

Officials say that a second inmate who was in the same cell as Coyer began experiencing unknown health issues. That inmate was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

A search of the cell found no illegal substances or contraband.

Coyer has been in jail since May 2022 for attempting to elude law enforcement, assault and other charges.
