In a press release, investigators said they identified all parties involved in the shooting and the investigation revealed that the shooting occurred during the commission a crime and the person who shot Currie acted in self-defense.
Greensboro police said their department has no reason to believe the person involved poses any ongoing threat to the community.
Officers said the investigation into the incident is ongoing and will be turned over to the District Attorney for review.
The school’s principal said James was on track to graduate in June:
“[James was] always going the extra mile to be a friend to someone in need,” said Principal Rodney Wilds. “Emotions are running very high with both students and staff. He was well-loved, well-respected, and he’s missed dearly.”
Just spoke with Andrew Mitchell’s defense attorney, who said his client is disappointed with the grand jury’s decision and maintains he acted in self-defense. Attorney Mark Collins said he believes the shooting was justified and Mitchell is looking forward to his day in court.
