MICHIGAN CITY, IN. (THECOUNT) — Hakim Zamir Lamar Qualls, a junior at Michigan City High School, has been identified as the suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of Dareon Brown on Tuesday.

Lamar Qualls, 16, is accused in the murder of 18-year-old Brown on Tuesday. He is charged with murder and carrying a handgun without a license, and his initial hearing will be Thursday, Dec. 27, at 8:30 a.m. in La Porte Superior Court 1, according to court records.

Brown was shot three times Tuesday afternoon while he wait outside a house with his girlfriend in the 200 block of Karwick Road.

The victim’s girlfriend later said Qualls walked up calmly and exchanged a salutation before fatally shooting Brown three times just before 1 p.m. Tuesday.

The girlfriend indicated no argument occurred immediately prior to the shooting.

When police arrived to the area on a call of shots fired, they found the victim’s girlfriend had transported him to an area hospital by private vehicle.

Just before 1 p.m. Tuesday, Michigan City Police were dispatched to the 200 block of Karwick Road on a call of “multiple shots fired.” They were notified of a shooting victim who had been transported to Franciscan Health Michigan City, where he was pronounced dead. source

Police searched the area before locating the suspect inside his girlfriend’s residence in the 200 block of Merrihill Drive.

Qualls was placed in custody “peacefully,” the affidavit said.

A backpack was recovered containing a silver revolver, and another black and brown Taurus handgun.

Qualls remains in custody at the La Porte County Jail on a cash-only bond of $1 million.
