SANTA FE, NM. (THECOUNT) — Cameron Martinez, a member of the Española Valley High School boys basketball team, has been identified as the young man shot and killed Thursday near the casino at Ohkay Owingeh pueblo north of Española, New Mexico State Police say.

Martinez died after suffering at least one gunshot wound and three other people were transported to an area hospital with gunshot wounds. Their names have not been provided.

According to a news release, State Police received a call about 9:30 p.m. Thursday regarding multiple victims with gunshot wounds at mile marker 2 on NM 68. Upon arrival, officers found a blue Subaru WRX in the northbound lane with two men and two women with apparent gunshot victims inside. source

State Police say the three people wounded are expected to survive their injuries.

Martinez, a senior on last year’s team, finished as Class 5A state runner-up last season.

A message posted on Facebook page for Española Valley High School sports Friday morning paid tribute to Martinez.

“Our valley is hurting!!!” said the message typed in all capital letters. “If you ever crossed paths with Cameron Martinez, consider yourself blessed!!! He was without a doubt one of the most loving, caring and beautiful souls on earth!

“Fly high Cameron, you will be forever missed. #RIP”

The message is signed, “Space Jam Cam Club.”

Martinez was a senior on last year’s team. He primarily came off the bench and played every position but point guard, the coach said, and excelled playing defense.

The investigation is ongoing.
