BLOOMFIELD, IA. (THECOUNT) — A wrong-way driver was killed Sunday night after a head-on collision in Davis County, in the rural southeastern corner of Iowa, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

The fatal crash occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Highway 2 near West Grove, an unincorporated community located in western Davis County, roughly 10 miles west of Bloomfield — the county seat. The area sits near the Missouri border and is approximately 80 miles southeast of Des Moines.

According to a crash report from the Iowa State Patrol, the driver of a 2010 Buick Enclave was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of Highway 2 when the vehicle collided head-on with a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Both drivers and a passenger in the Buick were transported to Davis County Hospital in Bloomfield following the crash. The driver of the Buick was pronounced dead at the hospital. The extent of injuries sustained by the Jeep’s driver has not been specified in official reports.

The Iowa State Patrol confirmed the Buick’s driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.

As of this report, no names have been publicly released pending notification of next of kin. No further details regarding the identities or residences of those involved have been made available by authorities.

Davis County is a rural county with a population of approximately 8,000 residents. Bloomfield, the county seat, is located along Highway 2 in the southeastern part of the state, situated between the larger regional centers of Ottumwa to the north and the Missouri border to the south. The county is part of the broader southeast Iowa region, which includes Van Buren, Appanoose, and Wapello counties.

Highway 2 is a two-lane state highway that spans the southern tier of Iowa, connecting communities from the Nebraska border in the west to Fort Madison in the east. The route runs through largely rural terrain and has historically been the site of high-speed fatal crashes in Davis and surrounding counties.

Wrong-way driving crashes are among the most deadly collision types on record, frequently occurring late at night and often involving driver impairment. Law enforcement has not released any information regarding a possible cause for the Buick driver traveling against traffic.

The Iowa State Patrol is leading the investigation. Witnesses or anyone with information about the crash are encouraged to contact the Iowa State Patrol’s Troop G district, which covers the southeastern portion of the state.

The fatality adds to a troubling 2026 tally on Iowa roads. According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, 44 people have died on Iowa roads so far this year — six more than were recorded at the same point in 2025. Over the last five years, an average of 337 people have been killed in statewide crashes annually.

Safety advocates and Iowa DOT officials have consistently urged motorists to remain alert at night on rural two-lane highways, where wrong-way driving and limited lighting dramatically increase the risk of fatal collisions. Seat belt usage remains one of the most critical factors in crash survivability — a factor tragically absent in Sunday night’s fatal outcome.

Editor’s note: One secondary source (KCRG) places the collision on “Ice Avenue in West Grove” rather than Highway 2 itself. The Iowa State Patrol crash report, as cited by sources, identifies Highway 2 as the crash location. If “Ice Avenue” is a local road name for a section of Highway 2 in West Grove, both references may be consistent.
