According to troopers, the impact from the SUV caused Veglatte’s vehicle to strike him. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead as a result of the crash.
Police said Veglatte had one passenger in his vehicle at the time of the incident. That passenger sustained minor injuries. Two occupants of the SUV involved in the crash also suffered minor injuries, according to authorities.
No names other than Veglatte’s have been released.
The circumstances surrounding why the vehicle became disabled have not been disclosed. Officials have also not released information regarding roadway conditions at the time of the collision.
Interstate 287 is a major highway running through central and northern New Jersey, including Somerset County. Exit 14B in Bridgewater Township provides access to U.S. Route 22 West, a heavily traveled commercial corridor in the region. Law enforcement officials routinely caution motorists to exercise extreme care when exiting a disabled vehicle on high-speed roadways, particularly at night when visibility may be reduced.
The New Jersey State Police are continuing to investigate the crash. No additional details have been made available.
Editor’s note; Media outlets incorrectly listed Veglatte’s age as 22.
