UXBRIDGE, MA. (THECOUNT) — Uxbridge Police Officer Stephen LaPorta, 43, died after being involved in a crash early Wednesday while on duty along Route 146 in Uxbridge, Massachusetts, authorities confirmed.
The death of Officer LaPorta has prompted an outpouring of grief across the community, with black bunting placed outside the Uxbridge Police Department in honor of the fallen officer.

According to officials, the crash occurred at approximately 12:40 a.m. on the northbound side of Route 146. At the time of the incident, LaPorta was actively assisting a motorist when the crash occurred. Details regarding the circumstances leading up to the collision have not been released.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and initiated lifesaving measures. Despite those efforts, LaPorta was pronounced dead at the location.
Uxbridge Police Chief Marc Montminy confirmed the officer’s death and released a statement acknowledging the profound impact on the department and the town.
“This is a devastating loss for our department and our community,” Montminy said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the officer’s family, loved ones and fellow officers during this incredibly difficult time.”
Officer LaPorta had been serving as a full-time patrol officer with the Uxbridge Police Department since June 2024. Prior to joining the patrol division full time, he worked for the department as a full-time dispatcher and also served in a part-time patrol capacity.
Department officials noted that LaPorta’s varied roles within the agency allowed him to contribute to both frontline policing and emergency communications, giving him a broad understanding of public safety operations.
The Uxbridge Police Department announced that counseling and support services are being made available to officers, dispatchers and civilian staff as they cope with the loss of their colleague. Law enforcement agencies often provide peer support and mental health resources following line-of-duty deaths due to the emotional toll such incidents can have on first responders.
Route 146, where the crash occurred, is a major north-south corridor connecting central Massachusetts with Rhode Island. The roadway has seen significant traffic volume over the years, particularly during overnight hours when commercial and commuter traffic continues despite reduced visibility.
Authorities have not released information regarding other vehicles involved or whether weather or road conditions were factors. Officials have also not indicated whether charges or citations are expected, emphasizing that the matter remains under review.
