LOUISVILLE, KY. (THECOUNT) — A tragic accident in the Fairdale neighborhood claimed the life of 14-year-old Keayland J. McKune on Saturday, Dec. 28, with another teenager hospitalized following a crash involving a reportedly stolen vehicle.

Louisville police were on routine patrol near the Jefferson-Bullitt County line when they spotted a car that had been reported stolen with two occupants inside. An attempt was made to stop the vehicle, but it accelerated away at a high speed, leading officers to abandon the pursuit for safety reasons.

Shortly thereafter, an officer reported seeing sparks approximately half a mile down the road. Responding to the scene, police found an overturned car in the 10300 block of National Turnpike. Immediate aid was provided to the victims until emergency medical services arrived.

Sadly, McKune succumbed to his injuries before he could be transported to a hospital. The other teenager from the crash was taken to Norton Children’s Hospital and is expected to recover.

The Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) believes the crashed vehicle was indeed the one they had earlier decided not to chase. At this point, the identity of the driver remains unknown. The investigation has been handed over to LMPD’s Traffic Unit to determine the full details of the incident.
