TALLAPOOSA COUNTY, AL. (THECOUNT) — 36-year-old Derek Jonathan McVey, of resident of Alexander City, Alabama, died in a single-vehicle accident in Tallapoosa County on Sunday night. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) has detailed that McVey was driving a 2016 Kia Sorento which, for reasons not yet determined, left the roadway. The vehicle struck a fence, then a mailbox, followed by several trees before ultimately overturning.

The crash took place shortly before 9:00 p.m. on Campground Road and Kodiak Lane, near McVey’s home.

ALEA’s investigation revealed that McVey was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the incident. Following the vehicle’s departure from the road, McVey was ejected from the car and was pronounced deceased at the scene by emergency responders.

The specifics of why the vehicle left the road remain under investigation by ALEA. No other vehicles were involved in this tragic event, and there were no other reported injuries.
