FREDERICK COUNTY, MD. (THECOUNT) — Michael Piermatteo, of Hillsboro, Virginia, has been identified as the victim in a Monday night fatal vehicle crash in Frederick County, Maryland.

Mike Piermatteo, 57, was killed in a single-vehicle crash near Frederick Monday night.

According to reports, 59-year-old Scarlet Estep, of Gore, Virginia, was operating a GMC pickup truck on Interstate 340 near Mt. Zion Road in Frederick, when for unknown reasons, the vehicle exited the roadway around 7:20 p.m. Monday. The vehicle then overcorrected and crossed all lanes of the roadway before coming into contact with an embankment.

Piermatteo, who was traveling as a passenger in the vehicle, was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead of blunt force trauma injuries suffered in the wreck.

Estep was transported to an area hospital with unknown injuries.

According to Facebook, Piermatteo had ties to Medford, New Jersey.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
