CHARLOTTE-MECKLENBURG, NC. (THECOUNT) — Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Major Crash Investigation Unit have identified Amanda Hopkins as the pedestrian fatally struck by a vehicle during an encounter with deputies on Tuesday morning.

Hopkins, 35, was killed after she was struck by a vehicle while interacting with police Tuesday morning in Charlotte.

According to officials, at approximately 7:06 a.m., North Tryon Division officers responded The Plaza in reference to an Assault with a Deadly Weapon call for service. Upon arrival, officers located Hopkins in the parking lot of the Shell Gas Station at 6308 The Plaza.

As officers attempted to make contact with Hopkins, she began walking backward into the roadway.

Officers tried to coax Hopkins out of the roadway, however, she would not comply with officers requests and continued walking backward. Officers asked her to get out of the roadway multiple times as they attempted to de-escalate the situation. As Hopkins continued to walk backwards in the roadway, she was struck by a minivan traveling on The Plaza.

Officers immediately requested Medic to the scene, and upon their arrival, pronounced Hopkins dead of blunt force trauma injuries.

The driver of the minivan, Cesar Alexander Rodriguez Yanes, remained on scene following the crash and was interviewed by Major Crash Investigation Unit detectives.

The CMPD Internal Affairs Office also responded to conduct their own investigation.

The investigation into this crash is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD’s Public Affairs Office.
