COAHOMA COUNTY, MS. (THECOUNT) — Marquez Devonta Griffin, of Clarksdale, Mississippi, has been identified as the suspect arrested after being accused of fatally shooting a 1-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl on Monday in Coahoma County.

According to the Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office, an off-duty deputy responded to a shots fired call involving children at Coldwater River Road apartments near Jonestown around 2 a.m. Monday. When the deputy arrived, Griffin was found holding a small child at gunpoint.
At some point, officials convinced Griffin to drop his weapon. That child was then transported to safety. Police then located two other children suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
One of the children was pronounced dead of gunshot injuries at the scene. The other child was transported to an area hospital and later died of gunshot injuries.
Griffin has been charged with two counts of murder and two counts of aggravated assault.
According to Facebook, Griffin is originally from Clarksdale, Mississippi. He lives in Arlington, Texas. He attended Coahoma Agricultural High, according to social media.
The names of the children are not being released by officials at this time.
