HAMILTON COUNTY, OH. (THECOUNT) — Springdale, Ohio police officer, Kaia Grant, has been identified as the victim killed Saturday night when the cruiser she was in was struck by the vehicle operated by a suspect involved in a pursuit with a nearby police agency.

Springdale officer Sgt. Andrew Davis was injured in the crash.

According to the department, Grant, 33, was killed in the crash that occurred around 8:30 p.m. Saturday on Interstate 275 at OH-4.

Grant, an eight-year veteran of the Springdale Department, was transported to an area hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

“This is a deep tragedy for our city and for our police officers, and for Kaia’s family,” said Springdale Police Chief Thomas Wells at a press conference. “I stand here representing everyone in this room as the Springdale Police; I ask that you keep us in your thoughts and prayers, and please keep Kaia and her family in your thoughts and prayers,” reports WOSU.

Springdale Mayor Doyle Webster told reporters this is the first line of duty death in the city’s history. He called Grant’s death a senseless tragedy.

Sgt. Davis was treated and released from an area hospital.

The department’s release said the suspect from the pursuit is in custody, and a firearm was recovered from the scene.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation are investigating the wreck.
