WATERLOO, SC. (THECOUNT) — Joseph Gargano, of 35 Cochise Dr in Waterloo, South Carolina, has been identified as the pedestrian fatally struck by a vehicle Thursday in Waterloo.
Gargano, 71, died after he exited a disabled vehicle and was struck and killed by an SUV that swerved to avoid the stalled vehicle.

According to Highway Patrol Master Trooper Gary Miller, Gargano’s vehicle had stalled around 6:30 a.m. and was crossing Todd Quarter Road near Enchanted Oaks Road, in Waterloo, when he was fatally struck.
A 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe rounded a curve in the road heading south, then swerved to avoid striking a stalled vehicle in the southbound lane, Master Trooper Gary Miller with the state Highway Patrol said. The vehicle then struck the driver whose vehicle had stalled while the person was attempting to cross the northbound lane, reports IndexJournal.
Gargano was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 53-year-old Tahoe driver from Laurens and his passenger were wearing their seat belts and weren’t injured.
