DOBBINS HEIGHTS, NC. (THECOUNT) — Edward McNair Kavien Sloan has been identified as the suspect in the murder of a Richmond County teen Malachi Jaheim Hailey on Aug. 6.

Hailey, 17, was found dead behind the Dobbins Heights Community Center on the afternoon of Aug. 6.

Sloan, 23, is charged with one felony count each of murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Deputies responded to the Dobbins Heights Community Center at 3:01 p.m. on Aug. 6 on reports of an unresponsive male lying behind the building.

The body was reportedly discovered by a 12-year-old boy who was playing basketball about 20 yards away.

Investigators charged Sloan while he was already in the jail for one felony count each Jail records show that Sloan was arrested on Aug. 14 and charged with one felony count each of possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a firearm by a felon, altering or removing a gun’s serial number, and a felony probation violation. He is additionally charged with two misdemeanor counts of resisting a public officer, reports YourDailyJournal.

Robbery was a motive in the killing according to investigators.

The center is located at, 222 Earle Franklin Rd, in Hamlet, NC.

Sloan is being housed at the Richmond County Jail without a bond.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 5 for the murder and robbery charges.
