MISSION, TX. (THECOUNT) — Mission, TX, police are mourning the loss of one of their own, announcing Friday morning that an officer was shot and killed Thursday night, according to officials.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says the Mission police officer was shot Thursday night in the eastern part of the city 6 miles west of McAllen. Mission police Lt. Art Flores says the officer, whose identity hasn’t been released, died later at a McAllen hospital, reports WFSB.

“It is with a heavy heart that we have to share with all of you that one of our Mission Police officers was shot tonight in the line of duty, while protecting our community. He is in critical condition and all prayers are welcomed. #BackTheBlue”

The officer death force the cancellation of the Mission Crime Stoppers Golf Tournament.

“Due to the tragic event which occurred last night within our Mission Police Department family – the golf tournament scheduled for today has been canceled.

Please keep the officer’s family and the Mission Police Department in your prayers.”

No suspect information was provided by officials.

A press conference has been scheduled for 10 am.
