PHILADELPHIA, OA. (THECOUNT) — According to Penn Medicine, “a patient who met screening criteria for Ebola testing is currently being evaluated at HUP while tests to assess the patient’s condition are completed.”

The unidentified patient is being tested for Ebola at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, reports Fox29.

It is not yet known if the victim had recently traveled to a location in which Ebola is prevalent. There is a currently an outbreak of Ebola in the African country of Congo.

The hospital has received extensive training for the possibility of caring for such a patient since the appearance of the virus in the U.S. in 2014.

Preliminary testing indicates that the patient has another condition, according to Penn Medicine.

Dr. PJ Brennan, Penn Medicine’s chief medical officer, released the following statement:

Clinical teams at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania have received extensive training and conduct ongoing preparations for the possibility of caring for a patient with the Ebola virus since the appearance of the virus in the United States in 2014. In an abundance of caution, a patient who met screening criteria for Ebola testing is currently being evaluated at HUP while tests to assess the patient’s condition are completed. Preliminary testing indicates that the patient has another condition. Proper protocols and precautions will remain in place to ensure the safety of all of our patients and staff. We are not able to provide any additional information about the patient at this time due to privacy laws.

On Monday, an international group of public health experts called on the World Health Organization to convene an emergency committee to consider declaring the outbreak an international public health emergency.
