Mitchell Simmons, the Ohio man killed in a police-involved shooting in Kettering, was on his way to becoming a law enforcement officer and had actually met with the Kettering police chief during the process, officials said Tuesday.
Simmons, 24, met with the Kettering Chief of Police, Christopher N. Protsman, and other department members as part of the law enforcement interview process, said authorities familiar with the situation.

Simmons was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office officially ruled Simmons’ death a homicide Monday, saying he died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds, a report stated.
Authorities did not indicate why the officer had gained access to Simmons’ residence or what prompted the deadly shooting.
The unnamed officer has been placed on paid administrative leave pending further investigation.
