Theriot was traveling near the fog line, and was struck by an SUV that also was eastbound, state police say. Theriot was not wearing a helmet, but state police say they believe the lights on his bicycle were working. He did have the required red light on the rear of his bike, but state police are still trying to determine if it was visible from the required distance. Theriot sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on scene by the Lafayette Parish Coroner’s Office, state police say. source
The driver of the SUV was not injured, and a voluntary test indicated he was not impaired, state police said. Impairment is not believed to be a factor, but Theriot’s blood will also be tested, state police said.
This crash remains under investigation, but at this time the driver of the SUV has not been charged.
