Huntsville, AL., police charged Dennis Hammond with “reckless murder” on Monday morning following a weekend traffic accident on Jordan Lane that resulted in the death of a pregnant mother.
Investigators tell us the accident caused by Hammond, 57, claimed the life of Danetria Rice-Johnson, 29 of Huntsville. Rice worked for Human Resources at U.S. Army. The baby survived but is currently listed in critical condition.

Police tell us Rice was the passenger in a car traveling north on Jordan Lane near Sportsman Lane around 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Hammond was driving south on Jordan Lane and crossed over the turn lane and struck Rice’s vehicle head-on. Police tell us Rice was pregnant and was transported to the hospital for treatment but passed away from her injuries. sourcesource
Investigators say, Hammond appeared to be under the influence and was treated and released from the hospital.
He was arrested and charged with reckless murder. The investigation is ongoing.
Via Facebook: Our family is in disbelief of what has happen. Danetria Rice 8mths pregnant lost her life on Saturday july 8 2017 due to a fatal car wreck by a drunk driver. Danetria leaves behind her daughter; newborn son and husband by the grace of god who was saved afterwards. Our family is hurting and will continue too for awhile but has to remain strong.
