An man living in an Orlando suburb is fighting city officials after they demanded he uproot his beautiful, sustainable vegetable garden.
College Park resident, Jason Helvingston, planted a fantastic frontyard garden complete with micro-irrigation but officials say his bounty is against city code, and now they have required Helvingston to dig it all up — by yesterday, he did not.

“I said, ‘You’ll take my house before you take my vegetable garden,'” said Helvingston. “There’s nothing wrong here, there’s nothing poisonous here. This is a sustainable plot of land.”
City officials maintain that Helvingston’s yard does not have the required “finished appearance” and ultimately he may have no choice but to kill off his cash crop.
“This is another example of the government telling us what we can do with our own property — that should never happen,” he said.
Helvingston has decided to fight the city getting over 200 signatures on a petition to allow HIS veggie garden in HIS front yard.
“(I’m) definitely not bothered by it,” said the man’s next door neighbor, “As a matter of fact, we love it!”
The city board meets in December.
