Young AL Driver ‘Takes Own Life’ To Avoid Jail Following Overnight Tuscaloosa Police Chase

TUSCALOOSA COUNTY, AL. (THECOUNT) — Elyis Kani Taylor, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, has been identified as the individual who died following a police pursuit late Monday night into early Tuesday morning across Tuscaloosa and Greene counties. Taylor, 20, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to authorities.

The incident began at approximately 11:40 p.m. Monday when officers with the Tuscaloosa Police Department initiated a traffic stop on Taylor for a violation, according to Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit Captain Jack Kennedy.

Authorities said as officers made contact with the driver, they detected the odor of illegal drugs and ordered Taylor out of the vehicle. At that point, Taylor fled the scene, initiating a pursuit.

The chase continued through Tuscaloosa and onto Interstate 20, traveling southbound into Greene County before the vehicle exited onto Highway 11 and proceeded northbound back toward Tuscaloosa County.

Officials reported speeds during the pursuit exceeded 100 miles per hour. The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office and Alabama State Troopers assisted in the pursuit.

As the vehicle approached the area near Fosters Ball Park along Highway 11, deputies deployed spike strips, successfully disabling the vehicle’s tires, according to authorities.

Despite the damage, the vehicle continued for several miles before leaving the roadway and crashing into a wooded area.

Responding officers approached the vehicle and located Taylor inside with severe injuries. Law enforcement personnel and paramedics used extrication tools to remove him from the vehicle and provided immediate medical care at the scene.

Taylor was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

According to investigators, preliminary findings from a medical examination and evidence at the scene indicate Taylor sustained a gunshot wound to the head. A loaded firearm was recovered from inside the vehicle.

Authorities said a family member reported receiving a phone call from Taylor during the pursuit. According to investigators, Taylor stated he was fleeing from police, had recently been released from jail, and indicated he would not return to custody. The family member reported hearing what was believed to be a gunshot during the call.

Officials emphasized that no law enforcement officers discharged their weapons during the incident and no officers were observed on body camera or dash camera footage pointing firearms at the suspect.

The entire sequence of events, including the traffic stop, pursuit, crash, and emergency response, was captured on multiple law enforcement cameras, according to authorities.

The investigation is being conducted by agencies not affiliated with the Tuscaloosa Police Department. The Northport Police Department’s Accident Reconstruction Unit is assisting in the ongoing investigation.

Authorities stated the case remains under active review as investigators continue to collect and analyze evidence.

The pursuit route included Interstate 20 and Highway 11, major corridors connecting Tuscaloosa and Greene counties, commonly used by both local and regional traffic.
