Amanda Soto, the wife of U.S. Rep. Darren Soto (D-Fla.,) was arrested Sunday night on suspicion of disorderly intoxication.
Soto, 33, her mother and husband were at Disney Springs Sunday when she got into a physical altercation with her mother, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office arrest report.
Soto’s mother was highly intoxicated and having trouble standing, according to the report. Soto told deputies her mother had recently gone through a divorce and was having a hard time dealing with it. While deputies were speaking with Soto, they wrote in the report they noticed a strong smell of alcohol coming from her and she had trouble keeping her balance. Deputies said they did not find any reason to believe a crime had been committed and asked Soto and her family to take an Uber home. However, when the Uber arrived and the driver asked where they wanted to go. Soto said, “I don’t need you (f***ing) questioning me (mother****er).”
The driver told deputies she would not drive Soto and her family anywhere.
The deputy said they tried to calm Soto down, but she continued to yell profanities at the deputy and the Uber driver. Deputies placed Soto in handcuffs and tried speaking with her about her behavior on a nearby park bench. According to the report, she continued screaming profanities and crying hysterically. After the deputy moved her into a patrol car, she began banging her head against the window, the deputy wrote in the report. source
The congressman’s office issued a statement about the incident.
“My wife, Amanda, has for years suffered from depression and been under medical care. In accordance with her treatment plan and under her doctor’s supervision, she recently stopped using her medications. (Sunday), she drank too much and reached an argumentative state with a family member, which led to (her) arrest. She deeply regrets her actions and takes full responsibility for them. Amanda and her physician will be reviewing her mental health treatment immediately,” the statement said.
Darren Soto represents the 9th District, which includes all of Osceola and parts of Orange and Polk counties. He became a member of Congress in 2017 after serving nearly a decade in the Florida state House and Senate.
Amanda Soto was released from the Orange County Jail early Monday.
