VA Man Steve Smallwood ID’d As Rider In Sunday Waverly Fatal Motorcycle Crash

SURRY COUNTY, VA. (THECOUNT) — Steve A. Smallwood Jr., of Waverly, Virginia, has been identified as the victim in a fatal motorcycle crash Sunday afternoon in Surry County, according to Virginia State Police. Smallwood was 29.

The crash occurred at approximately 2:00 p.m. on Carlsey Road near Route 40 in Surry County, a rural area in southeastern Virginia. Authorities said Smallwood was operating a 2020 Suzuki 750 motorcycle traveling southbound on Carlsey Road at the time of the incident.

According to investigators, the motorcycle traveled off the left side of the roadway for reasons that remain under investigation. Officials said the operator then overcorrected, causing the motorcycle to re-enter the roadway and cross toward the opposite side.

The motorcycle subsequently traveled off the right side of the road and crashed into a roadside ditch. The impact resulted in serious injuries to Smallwood.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the crash was reported. Smallwood was transported to a local hospital for treatment but later died from injuries sustained in the collision, according to authorities.

No other vehicles were reported to be involved in the crash, and no additional injuries were noted at the scene.

Carlsey Road is a secondary roadway in Surry County that connects with Route 40, a primary east-west route used by both local residents and regional traffic traveling through southeastern Virginia. The area surrounding the crash site consists of rural terrain, with stretches of roadway that include curves, limited shoulders, and changing surface conditions.

Roadways in this region are commonly used by both passenger vehicles and motorcycles, particularly during daytime hours on weekends. Law enforcement officials routinely respond to incidents on similar rural routes where road design and driving conditions can present challenges.

Virginia State Police confirmed the crash remains under active investigation as authorities continue to review the circumstances that led to the incident.
