NC Man Jeffrey Baker ID’d As Rider In Sunday Columbia Fatal Motorcycle Crash

TYRRELL COUNTY, N.C. (THECOUNT) — Jeffrey Baker, of Mooresville, North Carolina was killed, and Megan Baker Overcash, 40, of Kannapolis, North Carolina was injured, after the father and daughter were involved in a motorcycle crash Sunday afternoon on the Alligator River Bridge in Tyrrell County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Baker was 68.

The crash occurred at approximately 4:20 p.m. on the Alligator River Bridge, near Columbia, which carries U.S. Highway 64 across the Alligator River and connects Tyrrell and Dare counties in eastern North Carolina. Authorities said Jeffrey Baker was operating a motorcycle traveling eastbound at the time of the incident.

According to investigators, the motorcycle crossed the centerline for reasons that remain under investigation and struck the bridge rail on the opposite side of the roadway.

The impact caused both the pair to be ejected from the motorcycle, officials said.

Baker was pronounced dead at the scene by responding authorities.

Overcash sustained injuries in the crash and was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment. Her current condition has not been released.

No other vehicles were reported to be involved in the crash.

The Alligator River Bridge is a key corridor along U.S. Highway 64, a major east-west route serving coastal North Carolina and providing access to the Outer Banks. The bridge regularly carries a mix of local and regional traffic, including travelers heading toward coastal destinations.

Traffic along the bridge was impacted following the crash as emergency crews responded and conducted an on-scene investigation.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol confirmed the crash remains under investigation.
