Man Killed By Shark In Same Area As Surfer Who Escaped Attack

On the same beach and just days after Champion surfer Mick Fanning narrowly avoided an attacking shark, another man has been killed.

A swimmer at Jeffreys Bay was attacked at Point, the same area that gained national attention after a video depicted Fanning’s harrowing escape from the jaws of a great white shark.

According to reports, witnesses said the victim was attacked at the Point. A surfer named Terry Oliver made his way to the spot where the attack occurred, and found a 3-4 meter shark taking bites from the deceased swimmer. Oliver began hitting the shark with his paddle, but it didn’t deter the shark. Eventually, the National Sea Rescue Institute responded, and the shark swam away.

“The swimmer who was attacked today was a highly experienced ocean swimmer and swam along the coast more than anybody else in Jeffreys Bay,” Brenton Williams, a local swimmer, told JBayNews. “We are all aware of the risks involved with ocean swimming and the danger of a shark attack is something we cannot control but we do minimize the risk by not swimming if there are birds and dolphins feeding or if sharks have been spotted in the area.”
