VIDALIA, LA. (THECOUNT) — Michelle Baity, of Natchez, Mississippi, and Jacob Bonnette, of Vidalia, Louisiana, have been identified as the victims of a fatal rollover crash early Sunday morning in Concordia Parish, Louisiana. According to the Louisiana State Police, the driver, Gregory Steele, has been arrested.
Baity was 17. Bonnette was 19.
Authorities said the driver of the vehicle, identified as 18-year-old Steele of Vidalia, was arrested following the deadly crash.
The collision occurred at approximately 12:37 a.m. Sunday at 518 Minorca Road in Vidalia.
Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to the scene following reports of a serious one-vehicle rollover crash involving multiple occupants.
According to the preliminary investigation, Steele was operating a 2001 Infiniti QX4 traveling northbound on Minorca Road when, for reasons still under investigation, he lost control of the vehicle.
Authorities said the Infiniti subsequently exited the roadway and overturned.
Investigators confirmed Steele was not restrained at the time of the crash and sustained minor injuries.
Baity and Bonnette, who also were not wearing seat belts, sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Louisiana State Police said an additional passenger inside the Infiniti was also unrestrained during the crash.
The additional passenger suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.
The crash occurred in Vidalia, located along the Mississippi River directly across from Natchez, Mississippi, in eastern Louisiana.
Minorca Road serves as a local roadway through residential and rural portions of Concordia Parish near the Vidalia area.
Louisiana State Police stated toxicology samples were collected from the driver and submitted for analysis.
Authorities said impairment is suspected as a contributing factor in the fatal crash investigation.
Following the preliminary investigation, troopers placed Steele under arrest.
According to Louisiana State Police, Steele has been charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, underage driving while intoxicated, vehicular negligent injuring, and careless operation.
Authorities confirmed Steele was processed at the Concordia Parish Detention Center.
Emergency responders remained at the scene Sunday morning while troopers documented evidence, examined the overturned Infiniti, and coordinated roadway operations in the area.
Louisiana State Police have not publicly released additional details regarding the sequence of events immediately preceding the crash.
Investigators also have not announced whether speed may have contributed to the rollover incident.
The crash remains under active investigation by Louisiana State Police Troop E.
