SHINGOBEE TOWNSHIP, MN. (THECOUNT) — Roy Berger, 30, of Vadnais Heights, Minnesota, was killed Thursday afternoon when his motorcycle crashed into a barrier and he was subsequently struck by a semi-truck on Highway 371 in Shingobee Township, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
Shingobee Township is located in northern Minnesota, just south of Leech Lake and near Walker in Cass County.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the crash occurred Thursday afternoon as a semi-truck was traveling southbound on Highway 371. The truck was driven by a 33-year-old Pennsylvania man, whose name was not released in the initial report.
The patrol said the semi made a sudden maneuver toward the right shoulder in the direction of the motorcycle.
The motorcycle then struck a barrier, according to investigators. The rear portion of the semi subsequently ran over the motorcycle’s driver.
Berger was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi was not injured.
The circumstances surrounding the semi’s sudden maneuver remain under investigation. The Minnesota State Patrol has not released additional information about what prompted the movement toward the shoulder.
The crash occurred on Highway 371 just south of Leech Lake, one of the largest lakes in Minnesota and a major recreational area in the state’s north-central region.
The roadway location places the crash in a largely rural portion of northern Minnesota, with Highway 371 serving as a major north-south route through the region.
No additional injuries were reported in the initial account from state authorities.
The Minnesota State Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances of the fatal collision.
