8 Dead Including 6 Children In Grand Haven MI House Fire; Murder-Suicide Investigated

GRAND HAVEN TOWNSHIP, MI. (THECOUNT) — Eight people, including six children between the ages of 5 and 15, were found dead Friday inside a Grand Haven Township residence after a suspicious house fire, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said some of the victims suffered gunshot wounds and investigators are exploring the possibility of a murder-suicide.

Grand Haven Township is located along the eastern shoreline of Lake Michigan in Ottawa County, approximately 25 miles west of Grand Rapids in western Michigan.

Police and fire personnel initially responded to the area Friday morning after receiving reports of the smell of smoke. Authorities were unable to locate a fire at that time and cleared the scene.

At approximately 11:42 a.m., emergency crews returned following multiple reports of white smoke coming from a residence in the 14900 block of Riverside Trail.

Firefighters entered the smoke-filled home to battle the blaze and discovered eight deceased individuals inside the residence.

Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Jacob Sparks said the scene remains both “complicated” and “complex” as investigators continue processing evidence.

Authorities have confirmed that six of the victims are children believed to range in age from 5 to 15 years old. The remaining victims are two adults believed to be in their 40s. Officials have not yet positively identified all of the deceased and have not released their names pending notification of next of kin.

Investigators have confirmed that some of the victims suffered gunshot wounds. Officials have not disclosed how many individuals were shot or whether a firearm was recovered at the scene.

Sparks said investigators currently are not searching for any suspects outside the residence and believe everyone involved in the incident was inside the home. One theory being investigated is that the deaths resulted from a murder-suicide, although authorities emphasized that the investigation remains in its early stages.

The fire itself is considered suspicious. Michigan State Police arson investigators have joined the investigation amid concerns that the blaze may have been intentionally set.

Authorities believe all eight victims lived at the residence. Autopsies are expected to be completed over the weekend and may help determine the official causes and manners of death.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding one of Michigan’s deadliest family tragedies in recent years.
