CA Teen Lifeguard Who Saved Boy From Drowning In Viral Video Visits White House

WASHINGTON, DC. (THECOUNT) —

WASHINGTON, DC. (THECOUNT) — A 16-year-old lifeguard who saved a 10-year-old boy from dangerous surf in California met President Donald Trump at the White House Monday, weeks after the dramatic rescue made headlines.

Ryder Williams and Nathaniel Rai joined Trump in the Oval Office, where the president honored the teenager for his actions at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz.

The White House meeting brought the teenager and the boy together again just weeks after the dramatic rescue, which was captured on video and spread widely online.

Trump asked Nathaniel about the rescue and how important Ryder’s actions had been in saving his life. The boy’s response made clear the significance of what the young lifeguard had done.

Trump then offered Nathaniel a message of encouragement, telling him, “You’re gonna have a long and beautiful life.”

The Oval Office visit fulfilled a promise Trump made after seeing video of Ryder’s rescue. The president had invited the teenager to Washington to recognize him for his actions.

Ryder’s heroics, however, did not end with Nathaniel.

According to Ryder’s family, the teenager rescued a total of five swimmers that day while working as a lifeguard. Two additional rescues occurred after he pulled Nathaniel from the water, and his family said those incidents were even more dangerous.

The circumstances highlighted the risks lifeguards can face while responding to swimmers caught in powerful surf. Ryder’s training and quick response allowed him to intervene when Nathaniel was in serious danger.

The original rescue video helped bring national attention to the teenager’s actions and ultimately led to his invitation to the White House.

For Nathaniel, the meeting provided an opportunity to see the teenager who helped save his life in a very different setting — the Oval Office rather than the California shoreline where their encounter began.

For Ryder, a summer spent working as a lifeguard took an extraordinary turn, carrying him from a beach rescue to a meeting with the president of the United States.
