DE Man Samuel Larkin Arrested In Saturday New Castle Fatal Motorcycle Crash

NEW CASTLE, DE. (THECOUNT) — Samuel Larkin, 42, of New Castle, has been arrested and charged with vehicular homicide and related offenses following a fatal motorcycle crash Saturday night in New Castle, according to Delaware State Police.

The crash occurred at approximately 10:50 p.m. Aug. 15 at the intersection of U.S. Route 13 and Schafer Boulevard.

According to the preliminary investigation, an Indian Scout motorcycle was traveling northbound in the right lane of U.S. Route 13 approaching Schafer Boulevard at the time of the collision.

At the same time, a Mazda 6 was traveling westbound on Schafer Boulevard approaching U.S. Route 13.

State police said the preliminary investigation determined that the Mazda failed to stop at a stop sign before entering the intersection and struck the motorcycle.

The operator of the motorcycle, a 54-year-old New Castle woman, was seriously injured in the collision and transported to an area hospital, where she later died.

Her identity is being withheld by authorities pending notification of her family.

When troopers contacted Larkin, who was driving the Mazda, they observed signs of impairment, according to Delaware State Police. Larkin was taken into custody without incident.

Larkin was transported to Delaware State Police Troop 2, where he was administered Standardized Field Sobriety Tests.

Following the investigation, Larkin was charged with vehicular homicide in the second degree — driving under the influence and negligently causing death, a felony. He was also charged with driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and failure to stop at a stop sign.

Larkin was arraigned by a Justice of the Peace and committed to the Delaware Department of Correction on a $5,101 secured bond.

The fatal collision prompted the closure of the roadway for approximately three hours while investigators processed the scene and worked to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate.

Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or has related video footage to contact Master Corporal R. Kunicki at 302-365-8417.

Information may also be submitted through a private message to Delaware State Police on Facebook or anonymously through Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-847-3333.

Crash Location: U.S. Route 13 and Schafer Boulevard, New Castle, Delaware

Authorities have not released the motorcycle operator’s name while family notification remains pending.
