Cambridge Professor Jason Arday Found Dead After Resigning Amid Plagiarism Investigation

CAMBRIDGE, UK. (THECOUNT) — Jason Arday, the University of Cambridge professor who resigned from his academic position after allegations of plagiarism and questions surrounding aspects of his professional background, has died at age 41, according to the university.

Cambridge Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Prentice confirmed Arday’s death Friday, saying the university was “desperately saddened” by the news and extending sympathy to his family and friends.

London’s Metropolitan Police said officers responded Friday afternoon to a report of a man found unresponsive at a residence. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and his next of kin was notified.

Police have described the death as unexpected but not suspicious. An investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the death. Authorities have not publicly disclosed a cause of death.

Arday’s death came shortly after Cambridge announced an investigation into aspects of his academic credentials and honorary appointments. He resigned from the university before the investigation was completed.

Arday joined Cambridge in 2023 and was described as the university’s youngest Black professor of sociology of education. His academic work focused heavily on race, inequality, education and social policy.

His rise to one of Britain’s most prestigious universities had attracted considerable attention. Arday had previously held academic positions at other British universities and built a reputation as a scholar whose work examined racial inequality and social disadvantage.

That reputation came under scrutiny this year following allegations concerning his academic work.

The Times of London reported on Arday’s 2015 doctoral thesis and identified passages that it said were “identical or near-identical” to material appearing in an earlier paper written by another researcher.

The allegations prompted questions about whether portions of Arday’s academic work had been improperly reproduced. Cambridge initially expressed support for Arday while the controversy developed.

Additional scrutiny also focused on claims Arday had made about his athletic achievements and charitable fundraising. British media questioned assertions that he had raised approximately $7.4 million for charity through athletic competitions and had completed 30 marathons in 35 days.

Those claims became another part of the wider examination of Arday’s professional history as questions about his academic record intensified.

On Aug. 5, Cambridge announced that it was investigating Arday’s “qualifications and honorary appointments.” The university subsequently confirmed that Arday had resigned from his position.

The investigation into Arday’s qualifications and appointments was separate from the circumstances surrounding his death. Police have not indicated that the academic controversy was connected to his death.

Arday’s appointment at Cambridge had been viewed as a significant milestone. He became one of Britain’s prominent Black academics in the field of sociology of education and was recognized for research examining racial disparities and inequality.

Before joining Cambridge, Arday held academic positions and leadership roles at institutions including Durham University and the University of Glasgow. His research and public commentary frequently addressed race, higher education and social inequality.

The controversy surrounding his work developed rapidly in recent weeks, placing his academic career under intense scrutiny shortly before his death.

Cambridge said its thoughts were with Arday’s family and friends following the news.

The Metropolitan Police investigation into the circumstances of his death remains ongoing. Authorities have emphasized that the death is not currently being treated as suspicious.
