WAUCONDA, IL. (THECOUNT) — A teenage boy died after suffering critical injuries in a crash involving an electric dirt bike and an SUV outside an Illinois high school Tuesday night, according to authorities.

The fatal collision occurred near the entrance to Wauconda High School in Lake County, located approximately 50 miles northwest of Chicago.

According to the Wauconda Fire District and Wauconda Police Department, emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 9:58 p.m. Tuesday to the 500 block of North Main Street for reports of a vehicle crash involving injuries.

Upon arrival, first responders discovered a collision involving an electric dirt bike and an SUV.

Authorities said both vehicles sustained significant damage in the crash.

The teenage operator of the electric dirt bike was found lying in the roadway suffering from life-threatening injuries.

The juvenile victim was transported by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for emergency treatment.

Despite lifesaving efforts by medical personnel, the teen later died at the hospital from injuries sustained in the collision.

The victim’s identity has not yet been released pending notification of family members.

Two occupants inside the SUV were not injured and were released from the scene.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the hospital and has scheduled an autopsy as part of the ongoing death investigation.

Officials have not yet released information regarding the circumstances that led to the crash.

The Wauconda Police Department requested assistance from the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team to conduct a comprehensive crash reconstruction investigation.

North Main Street remained closed in both directions for several hours Tuesday evening while investigators documented the scene and collected evidence.

Authorities have not announced whether speed, visibility, roadway conditions, or any potential traffic violations played a role in the fatal collision.

Investigators are continuing to examine all available evidence before determining the cause of the crash.
