Jonathan Cain Rips Bruce Springsteen: ‘You Were Born In The USA Dude, So Act Like It’

NASHVILLE, TN. (THECOUNT)Jonathan Cain, longtime keyboardist and rhythm guitarist for the legendary rock band Journey, is making headlines after criticizing fellow rock icon Bruce Springsteen over the singer’s political activism, calling him an “annoying, bitter old man” and telling him to “act like” the patriotic anthem he famously wrote.

Cain’s remarks came during an appearance on the “Tom Barnard Podcast.” Although the interview was recorded in May, clips from the conversation began circulating widely online this week.

The veteran musician spoke candidly about his conservative political views and his belief that celebrities should avoid using their platforms to influence fans politically.

“We’re blessed to live where we live,” Cain said during the interview. “And I’m obviously a conservative.”

Cain also revealed that he previously identified as a Democrat before his political views evolved over time.

“I used to be a Democrat back in the old days, but I just couldn’t go there anymore,” he explained.

The Journey songwriter argued that entertainers should focus primarily on their artistic contributions rather than political commentary.

“Guys like Bruce Springsteen should shut up,” Cain said. “Honestly, shut up, Bruce. Him and who’s the other one? Robert De Niro.”

He continued, “I mean, who cares, guys? Really? Do your art.”

Cain noted that while he is outspoken about his Christian faith and conservative beliefs in his personal life, he intentionally keeps politics separate from his performances.

“I just don’t think it’s cool to have celebrities going there. It’s a bad look,” Cain said.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee reserved some of his sharpest criticism for Springsteen personally.

“And, Bruce, I mean, what the heck? I used to like him, and now he’s just annoying. He’s an annoying, bitter old man,” Cain stated.

Cain then referenced one of Springsteen’s most recognizable songs, saying, “I mean, stop it, really. You were ‘Born in the USA,’ weren’t you, dude? So, act like it.”

Springsteen has long incorporated political themes into both his music and public appearances. Over the years, he has been outspoken on issues including immigration, social justice, and presidential politics.

In May, Springsteen made headlines during a concert appearance in Washington, D.C., where he criticized President Donald Trump while introducing one of his songs. According to published reports, Springsteen described Trump as “racist, incompetent, and treasonous.”

At the same performance, Springsteen voiced support for immigrants facing deportation proceedings and reportedly led concertgoers in chants of “ICE out now.”

The comments further fueled debate among music fans regarding whether entertainers should publicly engage in political discourse.

Cain’s criticism reflects a broader cultural discussion over the role celebrities play in shaping political conversations and whether fans prefer artists to separate their political views from their entertainment careers.

Journey remains one of the most successful rock bands of all time, with Cain contributing to numerous hit songs since joining the group in 1980. Springsteen, meanwhile, continues to be one of America’s most influential singer-songwriters, having built a career spanning more than five decades.

While the two musicians clearly disagree on politics, their exchange has once again highlighted the intersection of music, celebrity influence, and American political culture.
