‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Actor Fatally Stabbed, GF’s Son Arrested Murder

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (THECOUNT) — James Handy, 81, a veteran actor known for roles in “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Jumanji,” and “Arachnophobia,” was fatally stabbed Wednesday morning at a residence in the Tarzana neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, and authorities arrested Michael Gledhill, 44, identified by police as the son of Handy’s girlfriend, in connection with the killing.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers responded at approximately 9:30 a.m. Wednesday to a home on Erwin Street in Tarzana after receiving a 911 call from a person who reportedly stated that he had killed a man.

Investigators said Gledhill lived at the residence with his mother and later flagged down responding officers near the scene. Authorities alleged that Gledhill identified himself as the person officers were seeking.

Upon arrival, officers discovered Handy suffering from multiple stab wounds in the front yard of the residence. Emergency medical personnel transported him to a local hospital for treatment.

Despite lifesaving efforts, Handy later succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities arrested Gledhill on suspicion of murder and transported him to the Van Nuys Jail. Officials said his bail was set at $2 million.

The LAPD said the incident appears to have been isolated and investigators do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public.

Tarzana is located in the western San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles, approximately 25 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. The neighborhood is primarily residential and is home to thousands of residents within the nation’s second-largest city.

Handy compiled more than 100 acting credits during a career spanning several decades. His work included appearances in “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Jumanji,” and “Arachnophobia,” along with numerous television and film productions.

Investigators have not publicly disclosed a motive. The Los Angeles Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing.
